ALTROVE FESTIVAL comes to its fourth edition. The work done over the past three editions has earned Altrove the reputation of being one of the best public art festival’s in Italy and one of the most important in Europe. The festival has involved artists united by common features and by their choice of making the street as best place in which they can express their thought and emotions. This concept is rooted in the avant-garde movements of the twentieth century. In this fourth edition, titled “Altrove festival – Centro Arte Contemporaneo”, the artists will find themselves participating once again at the same time and, especially, in the same place: the city of Catanzaro. This idea is a distinctive feature of the festival in which the artists will work closely together in the capital city of Calabria and share their experiences and stimulate a valuable debate.
This fourth edition of the festival focuses on enhancing and regenerate the historic centre of Catanzaro, through the implementation of 8 urban art interventions, an establishment of relational architecture and a number of events within the most suggestive places as well as locations of historic importance. The abstract language, which was the leitmotif of the previous editions, is now accompanied by expressionist and naïve painters as well as photographers and audio-visual artists who will work on several supports and materials. Wall, glass, textile, iron and concrete will be some of the mediums used for the purpose of raising the quality and durability of the interventions.
The artworks will be installed within the historic centre, whose beauty and value seem to have been forgotten. Such murals, sculptures and installations might be an attraction for visitors as well as being a new and unusual pedestrian itinerary for the city dwellers, unused to wander through the streets of the ancient city.
As every year, the creation of the artworks will be accompanied by several side events. In the month of July, Thursday 21, Friday 22 and Saturday 23 many musicians, performers and visual artists will perform under the art direction of Fabio Nirta, as regards the music selection, and under the Spora collective with respect to the performing art events. All the preparations regarding the areas involved, will be designed and created by the architecture firm GRRIZ, recently concerned with the planning and realization of the exterior of the Italian pavilion at the last Venice Biennale of Architecture as well as a workshop within the MAXXI Museum in Rome.
The Altrove Festival – Fourth edition aims at rediscovering the cultural, historic and tourist asset of the region. It suggests new uses of the public space as well as giving a heritage of public artworks realized by some of the world’s most important artists.
