Paste Up Street Art of Hackney
Posters and paste up art has been utilised for marketing and promotional campaigns for aeons. It’s always been illegal, but enforcement is an issue when so many other crimes require urgent attention. Record companies were the main culprits when it came to free advertising space, they pasted bill posters everywhere they could. The corporate eye governed the rite of passage, determining what products and self values should be taught in different regions. Street artists deployed the paste up method years ago, its quick, removable and effective. A poster can be pasted on a wall in seconds and even if caught, the charges are not as serious as spray painting a wall. Printing can be inexpensive and affordable for artists to run their campaigns across entire cities. The featured pieces were photographed in Hackney, Shoreditch, and Brick Lane in East London.
